A primeira viagem de 2019: Varsóvia. Capital da Polónia. De toda a história triste que a Varsóvia carrega encontramos uma cidade feliz, rica em cultura e arquitetura.
My first trip of 2019: Warsaw. Capital of Poland. Despite the sad history that is associated with Warsaw, we found a happy city, rich in culture and architecture.
A noite caía sobre a cidade quando aterrámos no aeroporto de Modlin. Ficámos hospedados na cidade velha (centro histórico) num apartamento perto da Praça do Castelo Real da Varsóvia. Este estava todo iluminado e com projeção de flocos de neve. Nesse dia nevou imenso durante o dia, portanto estava tudo coberto de neve. O que é uma alegria sobretudo para as crianças. Embora tenhamos ido em janeiro (mês mais frio na Polónia, chegando a ter temperaturas de -25ºC ) apanhámos um Inverno bom, pois as temperaturas estavam entre 1º e 4ºC. As mínimas e as máximas lá estão mais ou menos em pé de igualdade, logo não se sente aquelas descidas abruptas da temperatura como em Portugal.
Night was falling on the city when we landed at Modlin Airport. We stayed in the old town (historic center) in an apartment near the Royal Castle Square in Warsaw. It was all lit up and there were projected images of snowflakes. That day it snowed heavily so it was all covered in snow. What fun, especially for children. Although we went in January (the coldest month in Poland, when temperatures can get as low as -25° degrees Celsius) we got a good winter because temperatures were between 1° degrees and 4° degrees Celsius. There, the maximum (day) and the minimum temperatures (night) are more or less the same so we don’t feel those abrupt drops in temperature like we do in Portugal.
Ficámos logo encantados com aquela praça e pelo facto de eles manterem as iluminações de Natal até mais tarde. Estivemos 4 dias, de 11 a 14 de Janeiro, o que é suficiente para conhecer esta bela cidade “renascida das cinzas” depois de ter sido destruída durante a Segunda Guerra Mundial.
We were soon enchanted by that square and by the fact that they kept the Christmas lights on until later (February). We stayed for 4 days, from 11 to 14 January, which is enough to know this beautiful city “reborn from the ashes” after having been destroyed during World War II.
A Estátua da Sereia de Varsóvia (Syrenka Warszawska) está associada a uma das lendas românticas mais famosas da Polónia. Encontra-se em vários pontos da cidade. Aqui é na Praça da Cidade Velha. A lenda conta que a sereia foi salva pelos pescadores e como gratidão ela prometeu proteger todos os pescadores dali e o povo de Varsóvia.
The Warsaw Mermaid Statue (Syrenka Warszawska) is associated with one of the most famous romantic legends in Poland. It can be seen in several points of the city. Here (photo) it is in the Old Town Square. Legend has it that the mermaid was saved by the fishermen and to show her gratitude she promised to protect all the local fishermen and the people of Warsaw.
No Museu pode-se interagir com vários meios audiovisuais, enquanto se ouvem algumas das composições de Chopin.
In the Museum of Frédéric Chopin you can interact with various audiovisual media while listening to some of Chopin’s compositions.
Palace of Culture and Science (generates some controversy because it was a gift from Stalin).
Cathedral Basilica of St John the Baptist (beautiful churches all over Warsaw) – Poland is an extremely Catholic country. Did you know that Pope John Paul II was Polish?
Zapiecek Restaurant – Typical Polish Food – Worth a try!
Dicas: No que toca a vestimentas, se forem no Inverno, levem um casaco comprido bem quente, cachecóis, luvas, gorros, mas por baixo camisolas finas e por camadas porque dentro dos espaços está mega calor (a blusa e as calças térmicas usei uma vez e soube bem porque andámos nesse dia mais na rua a pé e não ocupam espaço na mala).
Não encham a mala com camisolas grossas, mas o casaco tem que ser mesmo bom. As botas é importante serem impermeáveis, antiderrapantes e com pelo, se forem sem pelo calcem uma meias bem quentes.
Na viagem para lá estava um calor infernal no avião.
Tips & Warnings: When it comes to clothing, if you go in the winter season, wear a long warm jacket, scarves, gloves, hats, but underneath wear thin sweaters (a thermal one) and layered because indoors it is always extremely hot (I wore a thermal blouse and thermal pants once and I felt warm and cozy because we spent most of the day outside). Do not stuff your suitcase with thick sweaters, but the coat has to be really warm. The boots must be waterproof, non-slip and fur-lined (faux fur), if they aren’t fur-lined, wear very warm socks.
On the flight to Warsaw it was unbearably hot on the plane.
Visitem o Museu Polin (Museu da História dos Judeus Polacos), o Museu Chopin, entrem nas igrejas porque são lindas e ainda podem ouvir tocar orgão, vejam a vista panorâmica do Palácio da Cultura.
Almocem e jantem fora! Comida polonesa e internacional é o que não falta. Gostei muito do italiano “Bella Napoli” e do “Dolce Vita”. A moeda é o Zloty e fica tudo bem barato.

You must visit the Polin Museum (Museum of the History of Polish Jews) and the Chopin Museum. Visit the churches because they are beautiful and you can listen to the organ playing. See the 360° panoramic view of the Palace of Culture.
Go out to lunch and to dinner! There is a huge variety of Polish and international food. I really enjoyed the Polish restaurant “Zapiegek” and the Italian restaurants “Bella Napoli” and “Dolce Vita”. The currency is the Zloty and everything is very cheap.
