Os únicos cd’s que passavam na minha aparelhagem da Sony eram só deles (“Appetite for Destruction”, “GN’R Lies”, “Use your Illusion” I e II e mais tarde “Spaghetti Incident?”).
Ali em casa não era unânime, eu era a única que adorava aquela banda. Aliás, ali em casa crescia cada vez mais o ódio do meu irmão (mais velho que eu) pelo Axl Rose à medida que eu aumentava o som da aparelhagem. Consumidora assídua da revista Bravo, os posters na porta do roupeiro do quarto eram um clássico.

Para muitas meninas era logo um sinal de alegria, mas para mim esta resposta equivalia a um BIG NO. O meu irmão nunca iria comigo aos Guns, nem que eu lhe oferecesse os Cd’s todos do Phil Collins (boring) e dos Metallica…J

So, my question arose! “Dad! Can I go to the concert?!” – “ Yes, but only if your brother goes along”.
An instant sign of joy for many girls, for me, this answer was the equivalent of a FAT NO. My brother would never go with me to the Guns N’ Roses concert, not even if I gave him every single CD by Phil Collins (boring) or Metallica…J
Nessa semana não ouvi Guns, quer dizer, ouvia, mas muito baixinho e resolvi arriscar e perguntei-lhe na mesma. A resposta foi um “desaparece-me da frente”. Não fui ao concerto, a vida parecia mesmo que ia acabar. Nesse dia devo ter ficado fechada no quarto com a aparelhagem no máximo e o meu irmão a passar-se. Coitados dos meus pais!
During that week I didn’t listen to Guns, or else, I did but very quietly. So, I decided to take a chance and ask him anyway. The answer was “get out of my sight”. I didn’t go to the concert – It really felt like my life was ending. That day, I must have locked myself in my room, the stereo on full volume and my brother snapping. Poor things, my parents!
No dia a seguir, eram só notícias do concerto da melhor e mais explosiva banda de rock’n’roll do mundo, contudo as notícias não eram boas. Dizia-se que o Axl Rose, o vocalista da banda, com uns dotes vocais melhores que ninguém, talentoso, giro, sexy e com um Q.I. acima da média, tinha feito uma grande birra (é porque não viram a minha!) e não cantou quase nada. Diz-se que a banda começou com um atraso de 1 hora. O que sei é que as bandas que tocaram antes, poderosíssimas também, já tinham atiçado o público português. E o público português quando quer também faz muita m****.
On the next day, the concert of the best and most explosive band was all over the media, however, the news weren´t good. It was said that Axl Rose, the lead singer of the band with better vocal skills than anyone, talented, cute and possessing an I.Q. above average had thrown a tantrum and sang almost nothing (that’s because they didn´t see me whining!). According to the media, the band started with one-hour delay. I know that the also powerful bands that played before had already stirred up the Portuguese audience. This is the same audience that can do loads of sh** when they want to.
Os Soundgarden, liderados pelo Chris Cornell, e os Faith No More, liderados pelo Mike Patton, abriram o concerto dos Guns N’ Roses. Quem já viu Faith No More ao vivo (eu já vi) dão um grande concerto, mais, os gajos puxam pelo público quando querem dar show. Na minha opinião, o que aconteceu é que o Mike Patton tinha que puxar pela sua banda (queria ficar com os louros) e conhecendo a “sensibilidade” de Axl Rose, lembrou-se de pedir ao público para atirar umas garrafinhas de plástico. Depois do concerto dos Faith No More acabar, o palco estava imundo. O circo estava armado. Libertem as feras!
Soundgarden, led by Chris Cornell and Faith No More, headed by Mike Patton opened the Guns N’ Roses concert. Those who have watched Faith No more live (I did) know that they give a great performance – these guys can give the fans a show. In my opinion, the case was that Mike Patton had to cheer on his band (he wanted to take all the credit) and knowing Axl Rose’s “sensitivity”, he had the idea to ask the audience if they could throw some plastic bottles. After the Faith No More concert, the stage was filthy. Trouble was set. Free the beasts!
O concerto começou e infelizmente Mr. Axl Rose escorregou numa garrafa de plástico. Parece que ficou a cantar no chão uma data de tempo. Dizem os “peritos” em birras que Mr. Axl Rose fez uma equivalente a um menino de 2/3 anos. Saiu várias vezes, mudou de fato e cantou novamente. As garrafas continuavam a “chover” para o palco, até lançamento de very-lights houve (ainda bem que a segurança hoje é apertada) e tocou-se a magnífica música “Patience” para acalmar os ânimos.
The concert began and unfortunately Mr Rose slipped on a plastic bottle and fell. It seems he sang lying down on the floor during a long time. The tantrum experts say that Mr Rose had the attitude of a 2 or 3 year-old child. He got out of stage several times, changed costume and sang again. The bottles were still like rain on stage. Even flares were fired (I’m glad security is tight these days) and the wonderful song Patience was played.
Agora, passaram-se 25 anos e os três mosqueteiros (Axl, Slash e Duff) juntaram-se e vêm a Portugal! Depois de muito pensar, decidi ir vê-los. É óbvio que já não vai ser a mesma coisa, vai ser melhor. Dia 2 de Junho, lá estarei, no Passeio Marítimo de Algés.
Now, 25 years went by and the three musketeers (Axl, Slash and Duff) are together and come to Portugal! After much thought, I decided to go see them. It’s obvious it won’t be the same. It will be better. On the 2nd of June, I’ll be there at Passeio Marítimo de Algés.

Depois de escrever este texto encontrei no youtube um vídeo “caseiro” na íntegra do famoso concerto gravado pelo Blitz. E eu que cortei relações (deixei de comprar o Blitz) com este jornal depois daquela capa que eles fizeram do Axl! “Get in the ring” para a comunicação sensacionalista! Depois deste vídeo fico com a certeza de uma coisa, o concerto foi brutal e o público afinal até vibrou! Quem me dera ter lá estado com ou sem birra!
After writing this text, I found a home video on YouTube – the famous full concert recorded by Blitz. I had cut ties with the magazine (stopped buying it) after the cover they did with Axl! “Get in the ring” for the tabloid press! After this video I remain with one certainty – the concert was brutal and after all, the crowd cheered. I wish I were there, with or without the whining!

Axl Rose era o mais sóbrio da banda nos anos 90. Conseguia encarar o público sem a “Mr. Brownstone” enquanto os outros não. Contudo ficava sempre com a fama de bad boy pelos seus comportamentos à vista de todos e por ser frontal. No meio de despedimentos por parte de Axl, quase todos começaram a abandonar o barco. O teclista Dizzy Reed que entrou na mesma altura de Matt Sorum (substituto do baterista Steven Adler) mantém-se com Axl até hoje.
In the 90ties, Axl Rose was the most sober in the band. He could face the audience without the “Mr Brownstone” while the others could not. Yet, he always got bad boy fame due to his behaviour, there for all to see, and for being straightforward. Among layoffs by Axl, almost everybody started to jump ship. Keyboard player Dizzy Reed who had entered at the same time as Matt Sorum (who came to replace the drummer Steven Adler), is still with Axl until today.

Para quem tem a ideia que o Axl estava sempre alienado da realidade vejam as entrevistas dele no youtube, destaco uma nos anos 90 para a MTV (na sua mansão em Malibu). A voz grave, postura, cultura, sentido de humor e beleza tudo reunido numa só pessoa. As músicas espelham bem a personalidade deste cantor único: “Welcome to the jungle” espelham o seu lado alienado e depois a “November Rain”, “Sweet Child O’ mine ou “Don’t Cry” o lado sentimental e carinhoso.
For those who have the impression that Axl was always out of touch with reality, watch his interviews on YouTube with special emphasis to one from the 90ties for MTV (in his mansion in Malibu). His deep voice, posture, general knowledge, sense of humour and beauty, all brought together in one person. The songs mirror the personality of this unique singer: “Welcome to the Jungle” his alienated side and then “November Rain” “Sweet Child O’ Mine” or “Don’t Cry” his emotional and loving angle.
Para quem goste ou não, esta é a melhor e mais carismática banda de hard rock de todos os tempos. Eles não provocaram a fama, a fama é que foi ter com eles. Por isso é que eram tão bons. E conseguiram a maior proeza de sempre. Estarem todos vivos ainda. E a fazer o que gostam, música. Agora a maioria das pessoas faz músicas, mas primeiro pensam “o que é que nos irá catapultar para a fama?” Não é instintivo. É uma máquina.
For those who like and those who don’t this is the most charismatic hard rock band of all times. They didn’t poke fame – fame ran towards them. That’s the reason why they were so good and achieved the biggest accomplishment of all – they are all still alive and doing what they enjoy, music.
Nowadays, most of the musicians make songs, but first they think “will it launch us to the spotlight?” It is not instinct. It’s a machine.
E como Axl não há mais nenhum. Afinal todos os génios têm algo de louco.

Muito se tem falado e especulado sobre a imagem de hoje em dia de W. Axl Rose. O que é certo é que o tempo passa, todos mudamos. Contudo acho que Axl Rose deveria voltar à sua franja. Faria toda a diferença no rosto dele. Estávamos habituados a vê-lo sempre de bandana na testa ou então com a franja.
Axl Rose será sempre uma inspiração para a moda. As t-shirts vintage, a sua imagem de marca com a bandana, os magníficos casacos de cabedal. Ele tem o seu estilo único. Uma lenda e um grande ícone de moda.
A lot has been said and speculated about today’s image of W. Axl Rose. The truth is time goes by and we all change. However, I think that Axl Rose should go back to his hair fringe. It would make all the difference on his face. We were always used to seeing him with a hairband or fringe.
Axl Rose will always be an inspiration for fashion. Vintage tees, his signature bandana, the magnificent biker jackets. He has his own personal style. A legend and a big fashion icon.

Deixo-vos abaixo uma playlist das minhas músicas favoritas. Relativamente ao último álbum (Chinese Democracy) destaco o clássico “This I love” que merecia um videoclipe e “If The World” que mostra um Axl distanciado de todos os álbuns anteriores. Uma coisa é certa, já nos anos 90, Axl Rose mostrava interesse em se distanciar do álbum “Appettite for Destruction”. E isso nota-se, obviamente, nos “Illusions” e nos fantásticos videoclipes. Os colegas é que já não achavam muita piada a este aparato todo. Piano? Violinos? Back Vocals? Axl Rose já estava muito à frente. O caminho que ele pretendia já começava a mostrar as influências de Elton John e Queen, seus ídolos. Teve, aliás, a honra de pisar o palco com Elton John para prestar um tributo a Freddy Mercury e também tocarem “November Rain” juntos nos prémios MTV. Fez também um showzão com Tom Petty and so on…
I leave you a playlist of my favourite songs below. Concerning the last album (Chinese Democracy) I would point out the classical “This I Love” which deserves a video clip and “If The World” that shows an Axl distant from all the previous albums. One thing is clear, in the 90ties, Axl Rose was already interested in distancing himself from the album “Appetite for Destruction”. That is also obviously shown in the “Illusions” and the amazing video clips. However, his mates weren’t happy with all this apparatus. Piano? Violins? Back vocals? Axl Rose was already far ahead. The path he wanted started to show influences of his idols Elton John and Queen. In fact, he had the honour of getting on stage with Elton John to pay a tribute to Freddy Mercury and they also played “November Rain” together at MTV Video Music Awards. He also gave an amazing show with Tom Petty and so on…
